The
2003 Premier Travel Awards for
Excellence were our most popular yet, with a staggering 52,803 votes
cast from viewers covering the entire Globe.
As 2003
was a very hard year for anyone within the travel industry, especially
those in Asia who were confronted with unexpected difficulties that
arose from terrorism, and especially SARS, we were pleasantly surprised
by the number of votes received. Due perhaps, to some of the
difficulties mentioned, the biggest surprise came from the Maldives who
for the second year in a row managed to beat
out tough competition from Koh Samui and Phuket, who came second and
third, and other destinations in Asia and around the world, to win the
Favourite Holiday Destination Award.
Another
major change in this years result came from the luxurious Grand Hyatt
Shanghai who not only won the best hotel in Shanghai category but also steamed
in to win the Best Hotel in Asia category. Another first came from the
award winning Peninsula, Bangkok which for the past few years has won
the Best Hotel in Bangkok category but this year also managed to pull
in enough votes to win the coveted Best Hotel in the World award.
In other
categories there was some movement with new hotels opening, and shifts
in ranking but overall
no major surprises. The popular restaurant in Phuket the Baan Rim Pa
once again managed to beat out a lot of competition from not only in
Thailand, but around the region, to win the Best Restaurant in Asia,
with the Felix at Hong Kong's Peninsula Hotel and Sala Rim Naam at the
Oriental Bangkok pulling in at second and third place respectively. Some
major movement as well within the Best Bars in Asia, with the
lofty V9 bar and restaurant taking first place, and Brix at the Grand
Hyatt Singapore and the new 87 at the Conrad taking the third position
of the best in Asia.
We hope
