JAL revamps "JAL EXECUTIVE CLASS -SEASONS" with new "SHELL FLAT SEAT" and other service improvements

8 July 2002

JAL is up-dating "JAL Executive Class - SEASONS", the airline's own branded business class, with a range of new service items and a new, flat reclining seat, the "Shell Flat Seat." (see picture here)

Designed in a stylish shell-shape, JAL' Shell Flat Seat arrangement has maximum 62-inch pitch and has a full recline of 170 degrees for better sleeping comfort when in bed mode. The shell form enhances passenger relaxation and privacy

In addition the seat is equipped with an adjustable flat footrest that folds up to extend the length of the seat in recline. It also includes a built-in massage function. The armrests fold down to create a total width in bed mode of 23.5 inches for greater comfort. When fully extended in bed mode, the Shell Flat Seat is 190 cm (75 in.) long.

A newly developed seat adjustment system incorporating four independent motors and gear systems ensures a soft, smooth seat movement at the touch of a button on the seat control panel.

The new Shell Flat Seat, replacing the original JAL Skyluxe seat introduced in 1996, will be introduced gradually on the Tokyo-London route (flights JL401/402) from July 25th and will be available on a daily basis from autumn. Introduction of the Shell Flat Seat on the Tokyo-New York route (flights JL006/005) starts in September and eventually the seat will be available on these flights on a daily basis later in the winter season.

JAL will introduce the new seat on selected long-range routes to Europe and North America during 2003. Altogether 16 of JAL's long-range aircraft will be fitted with the new seat.

Together with the new Shell Flat Seat, JAL has upgraded the 'Magic' entertainment system providing AVOD (audio/video on demand). New 10.4-inch video monitors are installed in the back of the seat in front, replacing the current 6.4-inch screens mounted in armrests.

AC power points for personal computers are also to be installed from Autumn 2002.

NEW "JAL EXECUTIVE CLASS - SEASONS " service features from October 1st

- At Tokyo's Narita Airport, prior to flight departure massage service is available in JAL's newly refurbished Sakura Lounge " Annex " in Narita Airport's Terminal 2.

- Travelers on flights where the new flat seats are installed can borrow elegant designer pajamas to relax in.

- A characteristic of the present SEASONS design concept is the altering of the colored headrest covers and other linen items with the natural change of the seasons. This will be continued with the introduction of new, softer pastel tones.

- For travelers wishing to sleep JAL will offer a light in-flight meal selection including new low calorie "healthy choice" meals that can be reserved in advance (from October 1st). This new special in-flight menu was created with the advice of the Japan Escoffier Association, a group of top hotel and restaurant chefs dedicated to enhancing and promoting French cuisine in Japan.

- Herbal tea will be served to passengers prior to resting.

- For greater relaxation the JAL Entertainment Network (JEN) audio programming will include a new "nature" sound track produced by Satoru Nakada, a producer of natural sound recordings, featuring sounds and music from the tropical island paradise of Bali and the Japanese island of Yakushima, south of Kagoshima, renowned for its ancient cedar forest.

SLEEPING COMFORT

- New, large sized blankets and pillows will improve sleeping comfort

- Aids to comfort include a facial moisture mask and a new cooling "ice eye mask".

- JAL has noise-canceling headphones that eliminate engine noise and other cabin sounds to provide better listening for in-flight entertainment programming.
l For snoozing passengers, there are DO NOT DISTURB or WAKE ME UP FOR MEALS cards.

OTHER NEW SERVICE DETAILS

- Other menu refinements include the expansion of Japanese cuisine selections to include light, small meals based on rice dishes, in addition to the traditional ochazuke (hot green tea with rice and savoury relish)

- Improved beverage services include high quality fresh fruit juices.

- The range of drinks available at any time in the "JAL Executive Class - Season" self-service corner has been extended.
