PATTAYA TO HOST BIGGEST MUSIC FESTIVAL

Pattaya, one of Thailand’s best known beach cities, will come alive again between March 22-24 with the biggest music festival ever held as part of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)’s efforts to promote the tourism industry.

Minister to the Prime Minister's Office and Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Chairman Mr. Somsak Thepsutin today chaired the press conference to inaugurate the Pattaya Music Festival at the Debut Cafe, Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre (QSNCC), in Bangkok.

Also in attendance were TAT Acting Governor and Deputy Governor for Marketing Mrs. Juthamas Siriwan, Chonburi Governor Mr. Chadej Insawang and Pattaya Mayor Mr. Pairat Suthithamrongsawat.

With support from a total of 16 leading Thai music production houses as well as a number of Japanese singers including Johnny Junior, the Festival will become the biggest gathering of over 80 musical bands and 200 singers and artists as well as over 300,000 music lovers.

With the presence of leading Japanese singers, the event will also generate free additional publicity and exposure for Thailand and Pattaya by the Japanese media. Domestically, the event will be broadcast live nation-wide on ITV Channel from 10:30 pm to midnight.

The musical performances will be divided into three major stages as follows:
Situated adjacent to Pattaya City Hall, the first stage featuring pop and rock music can accommodate over 20,000 audiences.

The second stage will be used for the opening ceremony which will be presided over by Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra. The stage will feature hip hop and indy music as well as the talents of both Thai and international DJs.
The third stage will be located on Beach Road (between Soi 4 and 6) will feature easy listening and pop-jazz music.

During the opening ceremony, many Volkswagen cars, Harley Davidson and Vespa motorbikes from Bangkok and Chonburi will parade around the city to encourage visitors to join the event while the Royal Thai Navy will also display a number of fireworks from its ships.

In addition, a major portion of Beach Road (starting from Dolphin Roundabout to Soi 6) will be converted into a “musical walking street” during the festival. Many music production houses and retail shops will also offer special discounts on their cassette tapes, compact discs, musical instruments and stereo sets.

The Festival is organised as part of the March’s “Summer Music and Sports” theme of ‘Thailand Grand Festival’ which has been designed to boost domestic and international tourism by creating a wider range of activities for visitors to enjoy, no matter when they choose to travel.

Located about 130-km southeast of Bangkok in Chonburi province, visitors can choose to travel from downtown Bangkok comfortably by two modern motorways either on the overhead toIlway or inter-city highway (known as motorway) to the doorstep of Pattaya in about 90 minutes.

To facilitate visitor flows from Bangkok, the Land Transport Department and Transport Company will join forces in operating over 200 bus trips between Bangkok and Pattaya during the three-day festival. Pattaya City will also co-operate with local public and private agencies to prepare for more parking spaces around the city for visitors travelling with private transport.

Pattaya has also seen a wide range of emerging tourism-related infrastructure developments. It is the first resort city in Thailand to have a full-fledged wastewater treatment system which can handle 65,000 cubic metres of sewage a day. Wastewater from households and commercial establishments now passes through the water treatment system daily. This helps prevent the pollution that would eventually threaten the health and wellbeing of the resort.

Another recent development is the newly established US$38 million Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (PEACH) at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort. Recognised as the biggest facility for meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition (MICE) in eastern Thailand, PEACH consists of three ballrooms and 19 meeting rooms with a capacity of handling 50 to 5,800 persons.

In 2000, Pattaya received a total of 2.53 million visitors. Of these, about 2.48 million visitors or about 98% stayed overnight. Visitors to Pattaya stayed an average of 4.33 days and spent an average of 3,016.42 baht (or about US$75.20) per person per day. This contributed a total of about 32.72 billion baht (US$815.76 million) to the Thai economy.

Also in 2000, there were a total of 231 accommodation establishments or a total of 23,608 rooms in Pattaya. The average occupancy rate was 60.20%, an increase of 1.63% over the 58.57% occupancy rate of 1999.
