ENVIRONMENTAL TOURISM TASK FORCE - A NEW PATH FOR DUBAI

Below you will find the entire speech delivered By Mr. Gary Mason, DTCM Senior Manager Tourism Affairs, on behalf of DTCM Director General, Khalid A. bin Sulayem at the above seminar on the environment and tourism.

Distinguished guests, members of the media, ladies and gentlemen,

On behalf of the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, and our Director General, Mr. Khalid A. bin Sulayem, it gives me great pleasure to address this seminar.

2002 has been designated as the International Year of Ecotourism by the United Nations General Assembly. This offers a unique opportunity for interested local and national stakeholders to review the social and environmental benefits that the ecotourism approach can present to host countries when suitably integrated into their development strategies.

The general public is becoming progressively more aware of the connections between tourism and the environment, and 2002 could be the year when ecotourism attains even greater recognition and momentum around the world.

Tourism is arguably the world's biggest industry and has been largely given a ‘free-reign’ to develop throughout the globe with limited, or in some cases, no guidelines at all.

It is now recognized that if travel and tourism is to flourish, it must develop in a totally sustainable way. The overriding reality is that early in this new century we can expect twice as many travelers as today. The travel and tourism industry transports, accommodates, feeds and entertains each one of them, with evident implications for consumption and impacts on the environment.

The environment is tourism’s base. Tourism shapes and affects the environment. A widely acknowledged problem is to the extent to which ill-conceived and poorly-planned tourism developments can erode the very qualities of the natural and human environment that attract visitors in the first place. Recognition of this problem is required not just at international and national levels but also at the local level where impacts and concerns are most apparent.

In Dubai, the DTCM is playing a proactive role having created the Environmental Tourism Task Force, which has two primary objectives:

    1.      To secure a clear understanding on environmental issues in Dubai by identifying threats to the environment and their influences on the perceptions of the visitors, tourists and residents of Dubai.

    2.      To effect change within the emirate of Dubai’s tourism and hospitality sector and related industries by creating awareness, recommending policy changes and by influencing the appropriate parties.

As is obvious from these objectives - the DTCM’s work is focused beyond mere policy statements. As an environmentally aware government organization, we strive to improve the environment in ways that enhance the overall quality of life for both visitors and residents alike, as well as encouraging ways to promote sustainable tourism.

In the past, our organization has been involved in a series of major environmental initiatives, including the staging of the first-ever environmental workshop for hoteliers and the real estate industry along with specific tourism industry Best Practice Workshops that focused on energy, water conservation and waste management.

We have also participated in major international environmental campaigns such as the ‘Clean-Up’ the World campaign in 1999 that captured the interest of communities worldwide and also at a local level, a variety of clean-up campaigns have been successfully organized by DTCM with industry support in popular tourist sites and beauty spots within the emirate.

As the sole planning, development and regulating authority for all matters pertaining to tourism in the emirate, the DTCM recognizes the importance of protecting the environment for residents, tourists and future generations.

We have organized and participated in similar awareness building initiatives offering a timely opportunity for all those involved in the field of tourism and the environment to advance some of the ground rules for action along with ideas for future development.

Being "environmentally friendly" is no longer a PR exercise - although, it brings considerable positive outcomes for a company in terms of an enhanced reputation.

To ensure that we maintain and further strengthen our position as a leading tourist destination, we have to dedicate ourselves to the vision of true sustainable development - with active engagement in conservation efforts and awareness building whilst maintaining a cultural integrity.

Tourism is a vital and expanding economic force. It holds a distinctive position that affects the direction of development not just for short-term gain but also for sustainable long-term investment.

One of the aims of the DTCM task force is to lead the way in initiating a dialogue between those actually engaged in tourism - service providers, public administrators and academics - resulting in the spread and continuation of responsible tourism within the emirate. We are positive that today’s seminar will be another step forward in the right direction.

Thank you ladies and gentlemen.

SPEECH DELIVERED BY MR. GARY MASON, DTCM SENIOR MANAGER TOURISM AFFAIRS, ON BEHALF OF DTCM DIRECTOR GENERAL, KHALID A. BIN SULAYEM.
