AIME Delivers Optimistic Outlook for 2002

Dynamic, impressive, busy and better than last year are just some of the ways delegates and exhibitors described AIME 2002, held in Melbourne last week.

As the first AIME to be held since September 11 and the collapse of Ansett, the industry was watching and waiting to see what the Asia Pacific's leading business travel event would herald in for 2002.

"AIME began on a very optimistic note with the industry uniting in support of the event, and that optimism continued throughout AIME," said Reed Travel Exhibitions' AIME exhibition manager, David Crooke.

"From the official opening right through to the close on Wednesday afternoon, the overwhelming response from exhibitors, delegates and the media was that people were at AIME to do business, to book events and secure venues," said Mr Crooke.

AIME began with an official opening by the Victorian Minister for Tourism, John Pandazopoulos, who declared his support for the event and the industry, cut the AIME 10th Birthday cake and toured the exhibition.

Exhibitors optimistic

Exhibitors confirmed that they were pleased with AIME 2002 and optimistic about the amount of business the exhibition will bring.

George Crossland, managing director of Africa-Reps in London, was very pleased with AIME.

"I do more business at AIME than at ITB or Travelmart. Seventy to eighty percent of the people I'm speaking to at AIME have the potential to give me business. I use AIME to set up contacts, familiarise people with an exotic location and keep the destination high profile. This year we had 48 appointments, with 71 enquiries not allocated. I've got to come back next year with more people to satisfy demand," Mr Crossland said.

"This show works so well. It's a long way to come from London, so it's got to be worth your while. You can look at the website and see who the delegates are and who you'll be meeting. You know you won't just be standing around chatting aimlessly. AIME is the best show I go to, by far. "

Joe Rayawa, regional director, Fiji Visitors Bureau Australia, was also pleased with AIME.

"AIME has become an important date in our calendar for the Australian market," Mr Rayawa said. "However, we've also found more interest from Europe. We've had more Pre Scheduled Appointments with Europeans this year - previously we've been Australia focussed. We've even had a waiting list for Pre Scheduled Appointments.

"In terms of doing business at AIME, we have already tied down some business deals with PCOs for the next 6 to 12 months. Every single one of our 11 participants has been ecstatic about the interest in Fiji at AIME. We will definitely have a bigger presence next year. We won't ever go back to a small booth."

Mr Lee Loong Koon, director exhibitions & conventions and cruise marketing, Singapore Tourism Board was also delighted with AIME this year.

"The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has been participating at AIME since the latter's inception, and it has been really good for Singapore this year.

"With 25 of our industry partners participating on our stand - which is the biggest it has ever been - we have been very fortunate to have so many appointments filled.

"Our compliments to Reed Travel Exhibitions for putting up a really good show, and we look forward to coming back next year."

Elsa Bradbury from the Wellington Convention Centre, said she is working on three strong leads from AIME.

"One of my objectives was to get the feel of the market. The PSAs were worthwhile because they are a great chance to meet people in the industry.

"I'm very comfortable with how the show has been run, it's well organised. The online appointment scheme is great because although you don't always get appointments with everyone you'd like to see, you can still talk to them after hours, and you know who will be there before you arrive. The organisers have done an amazing job, and I definitely think it's worthwhile to attend AIME."

Buyers impressed with pre scheduled appointments

Mr Pete Desrochers, vice president and executive secretary, International Council for Computer Communication, based in Canada, visited AIME 2002 as a hosted buyer.

"This is my first time at AIME. The show is a unique and potentially effective way to put people in touch with each other who might not normally have met," Mr Desrochers said.

"The online selection of Pre Scheduled Appointments for buyers and sellers is impressive. It's particularly useful that you can see whether the meetings are at the request of the buyer, seller or both. That way you have perspective.

"We have booked a major conference in Brisbane due to the PSA program. If it weren't for events like AIME, it wouldn't have happened. AIME has excellent variety and its size is appropriate for the market."

Rosemary Hancock from New Zealand conference and event management company, evenements Limited, visited AIME as a semi-hosted buyer.

"I found the event very useful and made many new contacts and some new friends. I enjoyed the enthusiastic company of the exhibitors and other delegates and the opportunity to experience first hand the best that Melbourne has to offer in accommodation, venues, catering... the list can go on and on. I can look forward with new confidence to bringing my clients to Australia," she said.

Lucia McHugh, Communications Coordinator, IPS Employee Assistance, visited AIME for the first time.

"AIME was really a sight to behold. The stands looked fantastic, the concept of the online diary was great as a tool for flexibility in changing and making that first introduction. It was really a great experience."

Lisa Messenger, managing director of Messenger Marketing, was "incredibly impressed with AIME".

"Everything ran like clockwork. I made a lot of new fabulous contacts and found many of those abroad to be most useful. Although I venture to Melbourne every couple of weeks for work, I seldom get to see the side I saw on this trip. I thought the Hilton was excellently positioned and offered all the comforts I needed. I caught the tram for the first time on the Wednesday and enjoyed the first leg of the city tram ride so much that I stayed on for the entire loop!

AIME delivers right audience

AIME exhibition manager David Crooke said that AIME 2002 delivered what it promised.

"Despite a difficult six month lead up to the event, AIME delivered the exhibitors - 598 - and visitors - 2,464.* Of the 2,464 visitors, 477 of them visited the show on more than one occasion," Mr Crooke said.

"International visitors came from 37 countries and numbers were increased on last year," Mr Crooke said.

"But even more important than the numbers is the quality of the audience and our surveys show that we attracted a high quality visitor to AIME," he said.

AIME visitors represented all sectors of the target market. Professional conference organisers accounted for 20% of the audience, association executives 10.6%, corporate executives 14.3%, incentive houses 7.2%, exhibition and event organisers 21.6% and travel agents or wholesalers 7.4%.

Visitors' main job function included 30.5% owner/directors, CEOs or general managers, 11.4% meeting or conference planners, 16.5% event organisers, 24.2% sales and marketing managers and 8.3% secretaries, support staff or itinerary planners.

46.7% of the audience attended AIME to recommend or make the final decision on booking business, 24.7% were there to research and 28.6% visited to plan or organise an event.

42.3% of the audience said they organised more than 10 events/meetings per year, 16.6% organised 6-10 events/meetings per year and 41.1% less than six events per year.

48.8% of the audience said they primarily held events in Australia only, 6.5% said they primarily held events internationally only, and 44.7% said they held events in both Australia and internationally.

AIME 2003 will be held on 18 & 19 February at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
