MGTO and SilkAir sign Memorandum of Understanding

Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) and SilkAir (MI) today, 8th May, 02, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop the Singapore-Macau route and encourage visitors from Singapore and South East Asian countries to travel to Macau and vice versa.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Mr. Joao Manuel Costa Antunes, Director of MGTO and Mr. Chooi Yee Choong, Vice President Commercial of SilkAir. Ms Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Deputy Director of Macau Government Tourist Office, and Mr. Edwin Hooy Kok Kuen, Manger Macau from SilkAir witnessed the ceremony.

With effect from July 2002, SilkAir, wholly subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, will run a twice-weekly operation on Tuesdays and Fridays. Reservation and ticketing will not only be available through SilkAir, but also through Singapore Airlines network.

Mr. Chooi Yee Choong said, "Macau which is SilkAir's 24th destination will serve to complement SIA's and SilkAir's well established network and needless to say, we will work hand in hand with both the tourism bodies of Macau and Singapore to promote Macau extensively".

As quoted in the Memorandum, SilkAir will render her support to Macau Government Tourist Office in hosting education and familiarization trips to relevant travel agents and media. SilkAir will also give equivalent consideration to Macau Government Tourist Office's overseas sales missions, consumer promotions and special activities.

SilkAir will provide local assistance to Macau Government Tourist Office in making contact with media, trade and consumer entities in the selected overseas markets where SilkAir has strong presence. SilkAir has also plans to make the Singapore/Macau route more viable through negotiation with other airlines for seamless air connections to and from mainland China.

Macau Government Tourist Office will distribute collateral materials, inclusive of SilkAir's at the Macau booth during trade and consumer events as well as to facilitate the selling of package tours to Macau and beyond.

Mr. Joao Manuel Costa Antunes said, "I hope the signing of Memorandum of Understanding with SilkAir will enhance the air connection between the two territories. In addition to attract more tourists from Singapore and nearby regions to visit Macau and at the same time, this route will provide access for travelers from Macau and nearby regions to visit Singapore and the other countries through SilkAir's regional connection.

SilkAir was established since 1975 and serves the regional extension of Singapore Airlines' global network. The airline now operates over 105 services a week to 23 exotic destinations in the region from Singapore.
