Visitor Kits to boost ASEAN arrivals to Singapore

Travel News Asia 5 November 2002

Stretch your Dollar, Ringgit, Rupiah, Peso or Baht in Singapore! That's the message the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) is telling potential visitors from Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand. The Board is launching and promoting a Singapore Visitor Kit that offers over SGD$240 worth of goodies.

Packed with free admission vouchers to key Singapore attractions, meals and drinks vouchers at favourite pubs and restaurants as well as shopping vouchers at leading jewellery retailers, over 34,000 of the Singapore Visitor Kits have been developed. These will be offered for a limited period* in the various ASEAN countries.

Visitors have only to book tour packages (with a minimum two or three night stay at a Singapore hotel) with participating travel agents to qualify. And to make an attractive deal even sweeter, lucky early birds in the Philippines and Malaysia will get an additional shopping voucher at a leading IT mall worth SGD$20
The STB is investing SGD$2 million to develop and promote the Singapore Visitor Kit. The Board is optimistic that over the next two months it will be able to see over 12 per cent growth in visitor arrivals from these markets, compared to the corresponding period last year.

Mr Lee Loong Koon, Area Director, ASEAN and South Asia, said the promotion underlined the importance of the region for generating tourist arrivals to Singapore.

He explained, "About one third of all visitors come from South East Asia. Hence our focus on telling ASEAN residents the amazing range of things they can do in Singapore in the next few months. We actually started working with our industry partners in September but given recent developments in Bali and the current economic climate, this promotion will also help bolster confidence in the industry, starting with intra-ASEAN travel."

Mr Wong Seng Kit, Country Manager Malaysia, said that his team on the ground in Malaysia has been fielding many queries on the phone and via email. He said, "The phones have been ringing off the hook since the advertisements appeared in Malaysian dailies on 29 Oct. There has been a lot of interest and we hope that this translates into more Malaysians visiting the Lion City in the upcoming festive season."

*The Singapore Visitor Kit is available only for a limited period, until:
· 30 Nov in Indonesia
· 15 Dec in the Philippines
· 31 Dec in Malaysia, Thailand and Brunei
