United Airlines’ Traffic Drops 13.9 Percent, but Load Factor Rises to 73.2%

4 June 2002

United Airlines' (NYSE: UAL) total scheduled revenue passenger miles (RPMs) fell 13.9 percent in May vs. the comparable month in 2001, on a capacity decrease of 17.2 percent. However, the carrier’s passenger load factor rose to 73.2 percent from 70.4 percent a year ago.

"United Airlines welcomes summer travelers with an excellent schedule of nearly 2,000 daily flights and a track record of smooth, on-time operations," said Rono Dutta, United’s president. "We are meeting all new security checks with line waits almost back to normal and no compromise of our operational reliability. For the month of May, which included the busy Memorial Day holiday, we completed 99.6 percent of our scheduled flights, and 86 percent of them arrived early, on time or within 14 minutes of scheduled arrival (the DOT measurement)."
