Dragonair recorded strong year-on-year growth in both passenger and cargo traffic in May. Passenger numbers rose 18.02% over the same month in 2001, while freight volumes surged 74.69%.
The airline carried 288,055 passengers in the month, compared with 244,076 one year earlier. The figure was off by 2.95% on a month-on-month basis, with 296,797 passengers flown in April 2002.
"The passenger and cargo markets continued to hold up very well in what is usually considered a slower month," said Stanley Hui, Chief Executive Officer of
Dragonair.
"Passenger numbers in May continued to be driven by traffic to China, with conferences and trade activity the key reasons for the strong figures."
Dragonair carried 14,922 tonnes of cargo in May 2002, compared with 8,542 tonnes in the same month last year. Month-on-month volume was almost identical, with 14,927 tonnes carried in April.
"Cargo growth again outperformed our expectations," said Mr. Hui. "May is a traditionally slower month. As a result of the Labour Day holiday in the mainland at the start of the month most production facilities close for a week, resulting in less cargo being flown. So the robustness of the market came as a bit of a surprise."
"The reason behind the figures is that imports and exports to the mainland continue to grow."
Dragonair is a Hong Kong-based airline, operating a fleet of seven A330-300s, four A321s and eight A320s, in addition to two Boeing B747-300 freighters. The airline's passenger network covers 27 destinations across the Asia-Pacific region, while its cargo network connects the markets of Europe, the Middle East, Japan and China.
