Alliance Airlines launches Sydney - Norfolk Island flights

Travel News Asia 24 October 2002

Alliance Airlines has introduced weekly flights from Sydney to the scenic and increasingly popular Australian external territory of Norfolk Island.

The airline has introduced 91-seat Fokker 100 twinjets on the route, departing the Sydney International Terminal at 1.15 pm every Saturday and arriving on Norfolk Island at 5.15 pm local time.

From 23 February, Alliance also will introduce a Sunday afternoon flight from Sydney to Norfolk Island, operating at the same times as the Saturday service.

Alliance's Norfolk Island services are being supported strongly by wholesalers such as Norfolk specialist Talpacific Holidays, which has developed a range of package tour options to the island, including 7 nights for $879 per person, twin share, plus $99.06 in taxes - a total of $978.06. The package includes return Economy Class airfare and accommodation at the Dolphin Inn Apartments.

The Managing Director of Alliance Airlines, Mr Scott McMillan, said the early afternoon departures were scheduled not only for passengers from the Sydney metropolitan area, but to enable other travellers to connect from country NSW, the ACT and interstate.

Flights returning from Norfolk Island arrive in Sydney at 12.30pm each Saturday - and from February, each Sunday also - again timed to assist passengers connecting with flights to other states or NSW regional centres.

"Norfolk Island is a unique destination with a fascinating history," said Mr McMillan. "The island is populated largely by descendants of The Bounty, and has evolved from one of Australia's most infamous penal colonies to a gentle holiday resort with its own language, customs and tax-free regime.

"Today, the island is becoming increasingly popular as a safe and relaxing holiday destination for Australians, and the commencement of Alliance services from Sydney - and recently from Brisbane as well - brings much-needed seats and competition to this destination."

Mr McMillan said Regional Express (Rex) provided an excellent "feeder system" for passengers from Canberra and regional NSW to connect with Alliance flights to and from Norfolk Island.

Although a new airline, Alliance draws upon the considerable experience and expertise of the former Flight West, which began jet operations to Norfolk Island in 1997, but ceased flying last year.

"Norfolk Island has a rich history, unique cultural and natural attractions and tax-free shopping," said Mr McMillan. "By introducing flights from Sydney and Brisbane we will bring much-needed competition to the island's air services, and make the destination more accessible for tourists and business people."

The Chief Executive of Tourism Norfolk Island, Mr Bruce Walker, welcomed the launch of Alliance flights from Sydney. "We are delighted with the introduction of these new services to Norfolk Island," said Mr Walker. "Tourism is our main industry and we welcome the vitality and element of competition that Alliance will bring to our market."
