Radisson SAS Taba launches new Waste Management Programme

Travel News Asia 7 September 2004

The Radisson SAS Resort Taba in Egypt, has implemented a waste sorting programme as part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). The hotel has employed the services of Hemaya, a waste management company recommended by the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment, to train staff in waste management procedures. A new member of staff, Ibrahim Mohammed, has also been appointed by Radisson SAS and trained by Hemaya to be exclusively in charge of sorting all of the hotel’s waste.

Plastic bags, cartons, paper, wood, metal and food waste is collected and stored separately from the general waste. These materials are then removed by Hemaya who arrange for them to be recycled. Food leftovers are given to the local Bedouin tribes to feed their animals.

Radisson SAS Hotels & Resorts has implemented a world wide ‘Responsible Business’ (RB) programme which covers all aspects of CSR including environmental sensitivity, community involvement, employee well-being and health and safety. In addition to the business-wide initiatives, designated RB teams at hotels and resorts within the group are encouraged to introduce schemes that will actively benefit the region in which they operate. Taba’s waste management policies are just one example.

Johan Aschan, General Manager Radisson SAS Resort Taba said: “This policy is the first of its kind in the Taba region, and we are proud to be a leader in this very important area of CSR. Our RB team, led by Celine Bellereau, has worked hard on this project and we will continue to find new ways of minimising the resort’s waste as the scheme matures.”
