Laguna Phuket still Standing and Operational

Travel News Asia 27 December 2004

When a journalist on CNN reported that the Laguna Phuket may have been completely destroyed by the Tsunami that has caused so much devastation across Asia, we contacted a source at one of the hotels there to verify this frightening information.

Thankfully, we were informed that the Laguna Phuket is fully functional and is still operating. The hotels have electricity and water supplies, and no major destruction to buildings has taken place.

The Dusit, which has the widest beach front of the Laguna Hotels, was affected by what our source described as more of a very large swell, than a whole Tsunami such as the one that devastated Patong and other areas of Phuket.

The Laguna had 50 rooms in total damaged at its 3 beach front hotels (Laguna Beach Resort, Dusit Laguna and Sheraton Grande).

The Laguna reports that a small number of guests and staff sustained injuries, but nothing too serious. A major clean up is currently underway, and the beach is expected to re-open Tuesday.

The Laguna Phuket is a popular holiday destination just 30 minutes from Patong by car and comprises of five luxury hotels.
