Thai AirAsia to launch direct, non- stop service between Bangkok and Kota Kinabalu

Travel News Asia 23 September 2004

Thai AirAsia is to commence a direct non-stop service between Bangkok, Thailand and Kota Kinabalu, the capital state of Sabah in Malaysia.

Scheduled to commence service October 21, 2004, the new direct service will replace the existing Bangkok – Kota Kinabalu flight that has a 30 minutes stop over in Johor.

Kota Kinabalu is the capital city of the State of Sabah and is located in the North Eastern part of Borneo Island. The non-stop route will reduce the travelling time between the two destinations by half, compared with the previous flight arrangement which took up to five hours of travel.

Thai AirAsia will offer one daily service between Bangkok and Kota Kinabalu with flights leaving Bangkok at 17:20 with a 21:10 arrival. Flights from Kota Kinabalu leave at 21:40 arriving in Bangkok at 23:30.

A special launch fare of just Baht 999 or RM 99.99 one way has been launched. These special fares are only available for internet bookings at www.airasia.com, and exclude airport taxes and various fees. Bookings must be made from September 15th to September 30th for travel from October 21st to March 26th 2005.

Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO Thai AirAsia commented on the new service, “The recent growth of Thai tourists and foreigners living in Bangkok travelling to Borneo is an encouraging sign. Thai AirAsia recognizes the full potential of Sabah’s eco-tourism treasures, and thus has provided the link to connect these two destinations. At the same time, we would like to offer the opportunity to the people in Sabah to explore Bangkok, one of the most exciting metropolises in Southeast Asia. We trust that this new service will open a new era in tourism developments between both regions.”
