Melbourne wins major Sustainability Event

Travel News Asia 13 April 2004

Melbourne Convention + Visitors Bureau (MCVB) has won the right for Melbourne to host one of the most important environmental science events in the southern hemisphere.

“Enviro 2006, the region’s premier event on sustainability, will bring 5,600 people to Melbourne and generate $19 million for the State of Victoria,” said Garry Kingshott, Chief Executive Officer, MCVB.

Enviro 2006 includes a 1,600 delegate conference and an exhibition expected to attract more than 3,000 visitors and 1,000 exhibitor staff. It will be held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre.

“This is an important event for Melbourne and the State of Victoria. It will allow Victoria’s best scientists, researchers and environmentalists to exchange ideas and develop theories to advance new discoveries and innovations,” Mr Kingshott said.

“Winning this event out of Sydney was only possible because of the unprecedented support and co-operation of four different State Government departments working together with other key stakeholders such as the City of Melbourne, Environment Protection Authority, EcoRecycle and the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre.”

Mr Kingshott paid tribute to Matt Viney, MLC, Parliamentary Secretary Innovation and Industry who chaired the working committee.

“The whole government approach coordinated by Mr Viney combined with the efforts of the private sector was the catalyst to securing the event for Melbourne,” Mr Kingshott said.

“Enviro 2006 is the sixth major business event won for Melbourne this year through the work of MCVB. These conferences will deliver more than $37 million to the Victorian economy."
