Jetstar to work with Gate Gourmet

Travel News Asia 11 February 2004

Jetstar announced today that global airline catering company Gate Gourmet would provide inflight food, beverage and retail services when the airline commences flying in May.

Jetstar Chief Executive Officer, Alan Joyce, said the contract had been awarded following a tender process and research into what leisure travellers wanted when it came to inflight catering.

"Our research revealed that people expect low cost carriers to offer simple, fresh, top quality food and drinks for sale inflight," Mr Joyce said.

"So we have asked Gate Gourmet to design a menu that will really suit these demands and provide our customers with a selection of great quality products.

"Jetstar passengers will be able to purchase a wide variety of food, beverages and merchandise on all flights and over time we hope to be able to offer a pre-order facility."

From its first flight in May, Jetstar will offer customers a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, juices, coffee, tea, sandwiches, salads, chocolate bars, muffins, pastries, cookies, cereals and snacks such as peanuts, crackers and dips.

Gate Gourmet Chief Executive Officer Henning Boysen said he was delighted his company had been chosen to become a Jetstar partner.

"It is always exciting to be involved in the start-up of a new airline, and we are totally committed to helping get Jetstar off to a flying start," Mr Boysen said.

Mr Joyce said Jetstar would look at introducing additional food choices, including hot meals such as soups, later in the year.

Jetstar is expected to announce its route network and fare structure in the second half of February.
