China Southern Airlines launches service to Lhasa, Tibet

Travel News Asia 28 July 2003

China Southern Airlines today launched its SARS-delayed service from Guangzhou, China to Lhasa, Tibet.

The new Monday, Wednesday and Saturday service originates from Baiyun International Airport in Guangzhou in Southern China to Shangri-La (formerly known as Zhongdian within the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Area/Region) in Yunnan Province with continuing service to Gonga Airport, Lhasa.

China Southern Airlines will dedicate a Boeing 757 on this new Tibetan route.

"The SARS crisis served to only delay the start of this news service but not our enthusiasm for serving Tibet," said Mr. Li Kun, Vice President, China  Southern Airlines. He added that, "China Southern Airlines' new service to 'The  Roof of the World' will be an excellent opportunity for business and vacation destination travelers to this unique and incredibly beautiful destination - set apart from the rest of the world. The rolling hills of the high plateau and stunning Himalayas are a sight not to be missed,"

"Today in the age of information with jet aircraft, highways and the Internet, mysterious and untamed places are rare to be found. But, Yunnan Province and Tibet are truly an exception. Also known for generations as The Forbidden Land, The Roof of the World and by many more, the mysterious Buddhist Kingdom, is one of world's last remote outposts," added Mr. Li.

China Southern Airlines attaches great importance on the budding Western China aviation marketplace. Currently China Southern operates nearly 100 weekly flights - from more than 10 cities including Mainland China and Hong Kong - to the main cities in Yunnan Province. This all-new service to Tibet will be an important supplement to China Southern Airlines' route network.

Yunnan is a well-known tourist province, with beautiful natural scenes, mysterious ethnic/folk custom, and ancient mythical legends attractive to countless domestic and overseas tourists. Yunnan enjoys not only rich tourist resources but also offers a comfortable climate in four seasons.
