Melbourne Convention + Visitors Bureau wins bid for Apimondia and ApiExpo 2007

Melbourne Convention + Visitors Bureau (MCVB) was abuzz with excitement late last week, following the announcement in Ljubljana, Slovenia, that Melbourne had won the bid for Apimondia and ApiExpo 2007.

Around 2,000 delegates are expected to travel to Melbourne for the five day Apimondia and ApiExpo, which is expected to generate approximately AUS$12 million for the State of Victoria.

The Congress and Expo is for anyone involved in bees, beekeeping, publishing, beekeeping equipment, processing, food and beverages related to bees, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. The aim of the Congress is to promote apicultural scientific, technical and economic development in all countries and the fraternal cooperation of beekeepers’ associations and of individual beekeepers throughout the world. 

ApiExpo 2007 is expected to cover approximately 6,000 square metres of space at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre and will showcase products related to bees and beekeeping.

Other recent Melbourne bid wins include the International Conference on Yeast Genetics and Molecular Biology in 2007, expected to generate more than AUS$4 million and the 2008 International Conference on Human Brain Mapping worth more than AUS$12 million.

MCVB has won 61 event bids that will take place between 2003 and 2020. The total number of delegates for these events accumulates to over 62,100. These delegates will spend around $160 million in the local economy and generate almost 200,000 room nights. The total economic impact of these events on the Victorian economy is estimated to be $280 million.
