SkyTeam Alliance Offers Convenience of Single Award Ticket

Travel News Asia 17 September 2003

Customers looking for frequent flyer award travel with the SkyTeam alliance have more mileage redemption options than ever before.

“With SkyTeam Awards, you have the convenience of using just one award ticket for travel to more than 500 worldwide destinations in more than 100 countries on a combination of the SkyTeam airlines,” said Paul G. Matsen, senior vice president – international and alliances, Delta Air Lines.

The carriers have consolidated their individual award travel charts into one easy-to-read chart and added new destinations, which gives customers more options to redeem miles on the carriers. In addition to more travel options, in several regions the carriers have reduced the number of miles needed for travel.

The SkyTeam Awards are available for frequent flyer program members of Aeroméxico, Air France, Alitalia, CSA Czech Airlines and Delta. Korean Air will offer the benefits to its frequent flyer members early next year.

With the addition of Korean Air, SkyTeam will offer customers the ability to gain and redeem miles on any SkyTeam carrier, regardless of destination. Unlike other alliances, these awards include travel on all North Atlantic flights – including travel from SkyTeam hubs Atlanta Hartsfield, New York JFK and Cincinnati International to Paris CDG, Milan Malpensa, Rome-Fiumicino and Prague Ruzyne.

"For example,” Matsen said, “you may choose to fly with CSA Czech Airlines from Prague to New York, and then proceed with Delta to Los Angeles. For your return, you may fly with Air France from Los Angeles to Paris and connect with a CSA flight from Paris to Prague.”

The award chart prepared by the alliance - available on the individual carrier’s Web sites – is an easy way for passengers to determine the best SkyTeam award for their travel needs.

In addition to using SkyTeam Awards for travel to specific destinations, the alliance offers customers the advantage of an around-the-world trip award. The around-the-world trip award can be selected for only 140,000 miles and allows you up to six economy flights with different members of the alliance with a single ticket.

SkyTeam members Aeroméxico, Air France, Alitalia, CSA Czech Airlines, Delta and Korean Air provide a route network concentrated in the most competitive markets where nearly 80 percent of airline travelers want to fly.

SkyTeam offers frequent flyers the opportunity to earn mileage counted towards elite status when flying any of the six member airlines. These miles can be exchanged for rewards (such as tickets for flights on any SkyTeam airline). Furthermore, top-tier flyers on each of the alliance airlines automatically attain SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus status with enhanced benefits that are additional to all member airlines’ current frequent flyer program offerings. SkyTeam Elite members receive priority waitlist for reservations and at the airport, as well as separate check-in in addition to other special travel benefits.

Customers with Elite Plus status qualify for the same benefits as SkyTeam Elite members as well as guaranteed full fare economy-class reservations on sold out flights, priority baggage handling, and access to more than 300 SkyTeam airport lounges for international trips, regardless of travel class.
