Thailand is a lot more developed than some people believe, especially Bangkok and other major tourist destinations in the country. For travellers using wheelchairs most of the major five star hotels will have special disabled rooms and facilities, but it is always a good idea to contact the hotel directly to check the extent of their rooms and facilities and to make sure once you book you can be guaranteed such a room. Some hotels for example, simply convert existing rooms and others have rooms that were purpose built especially for people in wheelchairs or suffering from other disabilities. All the major shopping centres have lifts, and many disabled toilet facilities, so shopping should not be a problem. Getting around may pose the largest problem and the easiest way may well be by taxi or mini van. The skytrain does have elevators at some stations which run from the street up to the main station level but stairs need to be used from there to the platform. If you have any specific questions regarding this topic or perhaps have experienced Thailand in a wheelchair and have comments you would like added please contact us. |
