The Rezidor Hotel Group has strengthened its portfolio of hotels in Africa with the signing of a Park Inn hotel in Tete, Mozambique. The hotel featuring 116 rooms is scheduled to open in Q4 2010.

Rezidor’s portfolio on the African continent now comprises close to 30 hotels and 6,855 rooms in operation and under development.

“This is our second hotel in Mozambique – in Q2 2010 we also will open the Radisson Blu Hotel, Maputo”, said Kurt Ritter, President & CEO of Rezidor. “Mozambique’s economy has made considerable strides in recent years, and we see a huge potential in this country.”

Tete is one of Africa’s most important mining areas and is located on the banks of the Zambezi River in Northwest Mozambique.

Park Inn Tete will be one of the first internationally branded hotels in town. Besides 116 modern and colourful guest rooms, the new hotel will offer an all day restaurant, a lobby bar, a gym, and a lovely outdoor swimming pool and terrace.

The 12 hectare development surrounding the building will include residential and retail areas.

Tete has always been a regional hub – originally established as an important Swahili trading centre. When the Portuguese arrived in 1531, it became a centre for the ivory and gold trades.

Since the cessation of the wars which have plagued Mozambique for much of the past few decades, mining-related investment has boomed. The area is known for considerable deposits of high-grade hard coking coal, used in iron and steel production.
