Car rental company Europcar is getting ready for what it forecasts will be its busiest Christmas on record as relief at the petrol pump and global economic concerns help fuel a passion for domestic travel.

The lowest petrol prices in two years has helped contribute to a healthy spike in rentals according to Europcar’s group marketing manager Ashley Jurberg who said the company was expecting a bumper December and January period.

“Christmas is always a strong period for us, but the signs are that these holidays will be our best yet,’’ Mr Jurberg said. “Due to a combination of factors including the lowest fuel prices we have experienced in a while, people are taking the opportunity to drive and explore more.’’

“From what we have noticed, they are opting for flexible, cost-effective and perhaps shorter breaks keeping the domestic market very strong.”

The volatility of the global economy was another contributing factor in people choosing to holiday at home in big numbers, according to Europcar.

“The confidence in the Australian market is high, particularly for good-value tourism products such as self-drive holidays,’’ Mr Jurberg added. “Reluctance for expensive, long haul travel has paved the way for shorter getaways exploring some of Australia’s great touring routes.’’

Europcar also reports that the highest demand is for its small and mid-sized vehicles. Europcar is one of Australia's most popular providers of car rental services, operating a large fleet of quality vehicles across a nationwide network of over 110 locations.
