A silent auction of sculptures by the renowned architect behind Hotel de la Paix in Siem Reap raised more than $10,000 for local community projects on an opening night that drew more than 200 guests to the hotel’s trend-setting Arts Lounge.

The Fantastical Asian Figures exhibit (on display until July 18) presents classical Asian shapes and icons within the whimsical, free-spirited artistry that has made Bill Bensley one of the region’s most in demand resort and spa architects.

A selection of pencil sketches, together with 70 intricately handcrafted pieces comprised of bronze deities and worshippers mounted on wooden blocks also reflect the finely detailed craftsmanship of Mr. Bensley’s renowned design team.

“We’re truly thrilled that the launch event has been such a great success on so many different levels,” said Mr. Nick Downing, Hotel de la Paix’s General Manager. “The imaginative art, the excitement, the commitment to the community and the spirited generosity of our guests and well-wishers really show who we are and what we do.”

Mr. Bensley was also delighted by the swift and generous response. “The sculptures were such a joy to design and create and it is so fulfilling when people appreciate the fascination and sense of adventure that went into each one.”

“Of course, it is also deeply satisfying when such a modest contribution can provide direct, effective and long-lasting benefits to the community. From this perspective, the rest is really secondary,” he said.

All proceeds from the auction go directly to the Hotel de la Paix Sewing Training Centre and the Shinta Mani Institute of Hospitality. The Sewing Centre is based at a nearby temple and overseen by Buddhist monks from the Life and Hope Association. After a six-month course graduates receive free sewing machines and starter kits that enable them to return to their villages to start their own business.

The Shinta Mani Institute of Hospitality is a boutique hotel and vocational training facility that supports and trains disadvantaged youths. The Institute’s team has also been praised for its pioneering outreach program that promotes sustainable tourism by helping local communities work their way out of poverty.

This connection between Hotel de la Paix and the local community is part of the spirited ambience that continues to define the award-winning hotel, said Mr. Downing. “At its best traveling is about discovering a real connection,” he explained. “At Hotel de la Paix and sister property Shinta Mani we don’t insulate ourselves from  our surrounds or the past. Instead, we link our guests to the community in ways that can change lives. Perhaps that’s why they are always so eager to do what they can to help build a brighter future for the people of Siem Reap.”

Hotel de la Paix is operated by ‘bmc management’, a Bangkok based boutique hotel management company currently managing hotels in Thailand and Cambodia.
