Phnom Penh's Funkiest Hotel

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Videos Wednesday, 19 January 2011

[HD video below] For many travellers, especially the hardened road warrior, most hotels - especially the major chains - offer very little to get excited about. In fact, despite many of their claims, they differ very little from one country to another.

It would be wrong to call them unimaginative boxes, but more often than not that is exactly how they feel.

Today however, a new type of hotel is emerging. One that makes the best use of scent and sound technology, lives up to all its promises rather than just a few of them, simplifies the travel experience by offering inclusive nett rates without additional charges for the internet, leaves an empty refrigerator so you can fill it with goodies from a local store, or fills it, but keeps rates the same as, or very slightly higher than the store you would have visited anyhow etc.

The best of these hotels tend to be small, and are often arty with fun, colourful designs that would shock many of the more traditional hoteliers.

Let's face it, most travellers want the same thing. An uncomplicated stay without hidden charges, comfortable bed and linens, safety box, high speed internet (preferably LAN but WiFi will do), our favourite TV channels, suitable security, good sound proofing, quality shower with sufficient water power, and all in a good location at a price that won't break the bank. If, in addition to those needs, the hotel has managed to create a space that energises and refreshes you, one that you look forward to returning to then even better.

In Phnom Penh, there is one such hotel, but with only 27 rooms you may want to book early to avoid disappointment.

Lebiz Hotel + Library only opened around four months ago, but is already gaining a strong reputation as an hotel with a difference.

Each of the 27 rooms have a slightly different design, but each comes with complimentary high speed internet on LAN and WiFi, 42" LG-brand LCD TV, Multipurpose adapter next to the bed so you can link your laptop to the TV, LG brand DVD Micro Hi-Fi system with iPos docking, quality LG air conditioning, ceiling fan, in-room electronic safety deposit box large enough for most laptops, mini-fridge with 2 bottles of complimentary water per day, tea and coffee making facilities,  bathrobe, all the necessary bathroom amenities and a very creative bathroom space with quality shower area that features a rain shower and hand held.

Lebiz is located close to the Central Market in the heart of Phnom Penh, and while the "library" component of the hotel may be small, it is definitely an hotel with a difference. Is it the funkiest hotel in Phnom Penh? As we have not yet seen every hotel in the city we should perhaps not give it that label. We will let you be the judge.
