Qatar Airways Operates Special Flight for Children in Doha

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Monday, 20 July 2009

In line with Qatar Airways’ active programme to work with the local community, 100 children were recently treated to a specially organised flight over Qatar. The 45-minute flight took the children, their aides and local media on a journey over the State of Qatar.

The joint initiative was aimed at bringing fun and joy into the lives of children – many from the Qatar Orphan Foundation “Dhreima” – and to contribute to the organisation’s activity programme set up to entertain the kids over the summer holidays.

Most of the children, aged between 5 and 16 years, had never flown before, resulting in an air of excitement and anticipation as the crowds gathered at Doha International Airport for the special Airbus A321 flight.

The children were welcomed by Qatar Airways’ Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker, who joined the event with Dhreima’s General Director Khaled Kamal.

To make the experience true to life, boarding passes were given out by the airport’s ground handling staff before the airline’s special guests entered the plane.

Special inflight kids meals were served and all children received the airline’s Oryx backpacks filled with fun items to keep them entertained during their next flights.

Dhreima General Director Khaled Kamal said, “We are delighted to partner with Qatar Airways to raise awareness among the community for underprivileged children.

“This big-hearted gesture by Qatar Airways for the kids of the Qatar Orphan Foundation has been an amazing experience for the children, and has brought bright smiles to their faces, and in fact, to everyone involved.”

Dhreima is a Doha-based public organisation launched in 2003 under the auspices of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned.

Its vision is to provide care and accommodation for children who have been orphaned. Since Dhreima considers families to be the best environment for children to be raised in, the institution’s main goal is to accommodate orphans with foster families, who receive support from the foundation, for instance through field visits from Dhreima staff.
