Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Tuesday, 5 February 2008

Finnair is celebrating Chinese New Year by serving sweet dumplings on its flights to and from China.

Sweet dumplings will be served in both Business and Economy Class. They will be on offer on flights from Helsinki to Finnair's Chinese destinations Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Guangzhou on 7 February and on flights from these cities to Helsinki on 8 February. Sweet dumplings are typically made of rice flour and contain sesame seed and peanut.

"The changing seasons in different countries and cultures make it possible for us to offer our frequent customers unique gastronomic delights. Finnair already operates flights to four destinations China via Helsinki, namely Beijing in the north, Shanghai in the east and Guangzhou and Hong Kong in the south. The number of passengers on flights to and from China is approaching the half-million mark," said Finnair Product Manager Markku Remes.

The Chinese New Year is the most important celebration in the Chinese Calendar for which people travel long distances to be with their friends and family. Nowadays the celebrations last four days and are typically days off in countries with large Chinese populations.

The Chinese calendar is based on a 12-year animal rotation. According to the Chinese horoscope, the Year of the Rat begins on 7 February of the current year. People born in the Year of the Rat are considered to be great charmers, creative, generous, wise and honest but also ambitious perfectionists.
