For those looking for an adventure in the Outback of South Australia, there's the Oodnadatta Track, a legendary dirt track which weaves through the northern areas of South Australia. Or travellers just interested in cruising through the countryside, can take one of the charming scenic drives through the wine regions. There’s more and the following is a list of self-drive tours to consider.

The Explorer's Way - or the Stuart Highway - is a week’s journey along one of the world's greatest drives. The route goes from Adelaide to Alice Springs and onto Darwin. Travellers can expect to experience spectacular and rugged scenery through the Outback. Travel into towns made famous by Hollywood movies, soak in the rugged scenery of South Australia’s Flinders Ranges and there’s more - wildlife, heritage, adventure, wine and food - everything needed to discover firsthand the delights of this part of the world.

Wine & Wheels: Discover the wines of Australia and what makes them so special. A fun way to do so is on a self-drive tour where travellers get to taste a variety of premium wines. Real Rugged Road: Experience the adventure of driving a four-wheel drive vehicle in extreme four-wheel driving conditions along Arkaroola's Echo Camp Back Track. For just A$30 per vehicle (plus refundable A$50 deposit) this self-drive tour includes a small, informative handbook, allowing drivers and passengers to identify various geographical and geological features along the way. A 'search-and-rescue-watch' is maintained on all vehicles, adding to the safety and enjoyment of this magical area. The drive operates daily.

Scenic Heritage Drive: If love is in the air and there’s nothing to despair, fill up your tank and head for the Barossa along a 57 kilometre sign-posted route winds through Bethany, Angaston, Nuriootpa,Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Marananga and Tanunda. Look for the brown and white road signs marked with '4', or ask for a copy of the Barossa map from a visitor information centre - the entire route is marked and easy to follow. This date palm-lined Seppeltfield roadway is one of the most photographed locations in the Barossa. Eleven cellar doors hug this route which is home to acclaimed attractions including Maggie Beer's Farm Shop, Seppelt Winery and wineries including Whistler Wines, Two Hands, Heritage Wines, and Barossa Valley Estate. Accommodation choices here include Seppeltsfield Vineyard Cottage, which was awarded 'Best Hosted Accommodation' at the 2005 Australian Tourism Awards.

Island Cruise: Kangaroo Island is a new icon of Australia and perfect for a self-drive holiday.Check out SeaLink which offers a range of great self-drive packages to choose from. Given the size of the island, the amazing number of things to see and do aim for a minimum of three to five days. Drive down to the Flinders Chase National Park to check out Remarkable Rocks and Admiral's Arch. Slip over to Seal Bay for a walk amongst the rare Australian sea lions.
