Wellington's Matterhorn wins New Zealand's Bar of the Year Award

Travel News Asia Friday, 27 July 2007

Wellington bars have snapped up nearly half the titles in this year's New Zealand Bar Awards, including the most prestigious award, Bar of The Year.

For the second consecutive year, Wellington's popular Matterhorn won the title of New Zealand's Bar of the Year and the added accolade of Best Drinks Selection.

Newcomer, the Tory Street cocktail bar Hawthorne Lounge, has stirred up the Wellington bar scene winning awards for both New Bar of the Year and Cocktail List of the Year.

And the Wellington nightclub Sandwiches was recognised for its international club DJs, dance bands and top local talent to win Best Music Offering, while Vivo Enoteca Cucina was named Wine Bar of the Year, showcasing the most extensive and bold wine list in the land.

Wellington is no stranger to praise for its restaurants, bars and nightclubs. They play a large role in the city's appeal as a destination for domestic and international visitors.

"These awards are great news for Wellington, which is emerging not only as New Zealand's nightlife capital, but one of the best in the Australasian region," said Sarah Peacock, Australian Marketing Manager for Positively Wellington Tourism.

The awards are coordinated by Spanton Media, creators of Australian and NZ Bartender magazines, and are voted for and judged by the local bar industry and international judges.
