AirAsia adopts Global Training Standards for Engineers

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Friday, 23 November 2007

Low cost airline, AirAsia has selected the renowned Aviation Australia to deliver its aircraft maintenance engineer training for its engineers. AirAsia started a revision program on site at the AirAsia Academy, KLIA Kuala Lumpur this month with an option for further courses in 2008. The training which is being conducted by Aviation Australia to AirAsia’s existing experienced aircraft technicians, fulfill the theory requirements regulated by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part 66 license.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is the centerpiece of the European Union’s Strategy for Aviation Safety. Its core mission is to promote the highest common standards of safety and environmental protection in civil aviation. The European Aviation Safety Agency is developing close working relationships with counterpart organizations across the world including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States and the aviation authorities of Canada, Brazil, Israel, China and Russia. Working arrangements between the agency and these organizations are aimed at harmonizing standards and promoting best practice in aviation safety world-wide.

In terms of Licensed Aircraft Engineers, the EASA Part 66 provides AirAsia with the appropriate training for the engineers to qualify its Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers to the European and International standards. This is vital as the current local aircraft maintenance licensing system is based on the previous UK CAA licensing system. EASA develops common safety and environmental rules at the European level which has been increasingly adopted by many countries globally.

Dato’ Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia Berhad said, “Our ever expanding fleet expansion must be supported by highly skilled engineers thus we are pleased to be working with a reputable training organization such as Aviation Australia. Its flexibility in the delivery of the programs fit extremely well with our existing training. Their world-class conversion training to the EASA standard at AirAsia Academy is fantastic and we are confident that this represents the best possible solution to our current requirements in Asia Pacific.”

Aviation Australia was founded in 2001 by the Queensland State Government with the cooperation of major airlines, aerospace companies and universities. Brisbane-based Aviation Australia is the only non European organisation to hold EASA Part 147 approval to deliver the full suite of basic aircraft engineering qualifications which is the platform the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority have recently used to model their new licensing structure against and the outcome AirAsia will use.

In just six years Aviation Australia has earned a reputation within the international aviation training community as a world leader in the delivery of basic engineering training. A number of world class airlines based in both the Asia Pacific region and the Middle East have elected to either use Aviation Australia for conversion training on site or to send their aircraft maintenance engineer trainees to study in Queensland at Aviation Australia.

Paul Bredereck, CEO Aviation Australia, said “The growth in the Asia Pacific region has been phenomenal in recent years and shows no signs of slowing. Aviation Australia is well positioned to deliver to this market, in particular to quality low cost airlines such as AirAsia who have a strong training commitment but use the expertise of specialized organizations such as Aviation Australia to keep the costs low, yet still obtain world class standards and qualifications.”

Aviation Australia is delivering a revision program to 24 students on site in Kuala Lumpur over 16 weeks consisting of theory refresher and EASA exams. On successful completion students will be presented with an EASA certificate of recognition from Aviation Australia showing examination credits towards the EASA Part 66 B1.1 Turbine Aeroplane license.
