Seafood Adventures in South Australia

Travel News Asia Thursday, 1 March 2007

South Australia is not only known as one of the best wine regions in the world but also home to some of the best seafood. There’s a booming supply of succulent seafood in the clean, pristine waters – from rock lobsters, and crabs, to prawns, marron and trout. Drop a line off the coast or if you’d rather leave fishing to the experts, head to South Australia’s finest fish markets and select your spoils or tantalise your taste buds at any of the State’ premier seafood restaurants.

Lobster Galore and More: Visit Ferguson Australia's live tanks and see live lobsters and king crabs while learning about Kangaroo Island's seafood industry. The store stocks the entire Ferguson Australia award winning gourmet lobster range. Get your taste buds ready for lobster oil and glaze tastings. You can purchase the freshest local seafood produce available in the adjoining retail outlet. Cooking demonstrations may be organised for group advanced bookings. The selection of seafood includes lobsters (live and cooked), Spencer Gulf prawns, scallops, King George whiting, lobster medallions, sashimi, seafood sauces, pate, cooked meat, lobster oil and glazes. Indulge in the ultimate seafood experience on one of the most beautiful islands in the world.

Bag a Catch on Kangaroo Island: While still on Kangaroo Island, explore the pristine beaches and bountiful waters which are unlikely to disappoint when it comes to bagging a catch. The fishing highlights include garfish, snook, tommy ruffs, salmon trout, bream, mullet and flathead, sweep and swallow head from jetties, beaches, rocks and river flats. You'll find jetties at Kingscote, Penneshaw, American River, Emu Bay and Vivonne Bay. Boats are available for hire, as are experienced fishermen for fishing expeditions. Tackle and bait are also readily available.

Smoked Salmon: Located in the Adelaide Hills town of Mount Barker, Springs Smoked Seafoods is an established market leader in Australia for clean, fresh, quality packaged smoked seafood. Visitors to the retail shop are able to view the fish processing area behind glass panes as well as taste and purchase the delicious Springs Smoked Seafood range. The smoked seafood range includes salmon, ocean trout and mackerel products. There’s also pate, dip and caviar.

Seafood Paradise at Port Lincoln: Port Lincoln is the Eyre Peninsula's second largest city, set on the shores of sparkling Boston Bay, Australia's largest natural harbour. A magnificent marina development, Lincoln Cove, is home to the tuna fishing fleets of the Great Australian Bight. Seafood is always on the menu, with seasonal specialties including southern rock lobster, western king prawns and oysters. Discover why Eyre Peninsula accounts for 60% of the State's seafood on Australia's only extensive seafood and aquaculture trail. Stretching from Whyalla to Ceduna around Eyre Peninsula's pristine coastline, the trail will take you on a journey through 16 amazing businesses. Tour South Australia's only sea horse farm at Port Lincoln. Learn how sea urchins grow in the waters off Coffin Bay. Explore a land-based abalone farm at Streaky Bay. Hand pick your own crayfish at Elliston. And eat world-renowned Smoky Bay oysters at the farm gate.

Ceduna Oysterfest 2007: The town of Ceduna in the Eyre Peninsula comes alive for its annual Oysterfest, to be held from 28 September 2007 to 30 September 2007, a weekend of entertainment, fine food and fun. Saturday begins with a street parade. The streets are lined with locals and visitors waiting to catch a glimpse of the brightly decorated cars and floats and to follow them down to the site to indulge in the festivities that await. Over the next two days, visitors are treated to an array of music, dance and fine cuisine. Cultural diversity is highlighted and explored, competitions abound, and children are catered for with parties, story telling, hands-on workshops, face painting and fun activities. Seafood gourmet delights are available.

The Big Lobster: Located in the coastal town of Kingston, at the southern end of the Coorong, The Big Lobster has displays of beer, wine and Rock Lobsters -- cooked and for sale. Available from the bottle shop are local South East wines from the famous Coonawarra and Penola wine growing areas.

Seafood Specials at Central Market: Central Market, buzzing with sounds, colours and wondrous smells is truly the destination for food lovers. Offering not only fresh fruit and vegetables, most of which are grown within one hour’s drive of the market, you will also find one of the largest ranges of meat and fish along with the gourmet specialties introduced by the waves of immigrants and their families who call Adelaide home. Every stall has its own special story making your visit to the Adelaide Central Market a wondrous journey.
