AirAsia set to Launch Flights to Palembang

Travel News Asia Tuesday, 31 October 2006

Palembang, the unassuming city nestled in the south of Indonesia is a thriving industrial city but many are unaware of its tourism potential. Beginning 22 November 2006, travellers will easier be able to explore this capital of the South Sumatera province when AirAsia secures its right to land in the city.

Palembang will soon be the ninth destination AirAsia flies to in Indonesia after Denpasar (Bali), Surabaya, Medan, Padang, Jakarta, Bandung, Pekan Baru and Solo.

With Indonesia as the largest archipelago in the world with over 17,500 islands, Palembang poses great potential as the gateway to many smaller islands untouched by development located next to the mainland and it is also the gateway to some of the richest tropical rainforests found in South Sumatera. It is also a great attraction for visitors who are looking for jungle trekking adventures.

Mr. Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia, said, “The growing economy is swiftly turning this city into a modern business centre as many major corporations especially agriculture companies migrate their businesses there due to its fertile land. We saw the untapped opportunity to provide direct connectivity for business community in Malaysia to travel low fares to Palembang for their businesses. This route is also to serve the huge labour workforce working in Malaysia.”

The airline will commence four flights weekly from Kuala Lumpur to this historical province starting from 22 November 2006. AirAsia has launched a celebratory fare of just RM39.99 or RP99,999 to Palembang. This special fare is open for travel between 22 November 2006 to 30 June 2007. Above special fares quoted exclude airport taxes, fuel surcharges and fees, and are applicable for one-way travel only.
