Charity begins at Langham Place Hotel in Hong Kong this Christmas

Travel News Asia 24 November 2005

Christmas is a time to celebrate and to share. In December 2005, the Langham Place Hotel, Mongkok, Hong Kong will collaborate with Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong (ADA), a charitable organisation promoting arts with artists with disabilities in Hong Kong since 1986, to jointly organise a month-long Christmas charity programme named "Act for Art".

Featuring a rich spectrum of activities, "Act for Art" aims to exhibit the outstanding talents of the ADA Angels and to raise funds for ADA in support of its efforts to promote art. The programme is fully sponsored by Langham Place Hotel and all proceeds from the programme activities will be donated to ADA. Highlights of the programme include:

Charity Sale of the World's Longest Gingerbread - A charity sale of a 23-metre-long gingerbread will be held at the Linkbridge connecting the hotel to the adjacent Langham Place shopping mall. A record attempt claim for this gingerbread as "The longest gingerbread in the world" has been submitted to the Guinness World Records. Combining the efforts of all the pastry chefs at Langham Place Hotel, this gigantic gingerbread measures 23m (L) x 60 cm (W) x 5-6 cm (H). It follows the recipe of the German gingerbread (Lebkuchen) with original ingredients, creating an authentic flavour.

Art Exhibition of Ms. Liu Tung-mui and SAORI Artworks - The Linkbridge will turn into an art gallery with colourful paintings of Ms. Liu Tung-mui and creative SAORI artworks. Ms. Liu's paintings, famous for their inspirational themes and beautiful colours, will add an extra festive Christmas feel to the Linkbridge. Ms. Liu is an ADA Angel, in which her talent and positive attitude has made her one of the "Ten Outstanding Young Persons Hong Kong 2005".

The exhibition also features SAORI, a kind of Japanese hand weaving with irregular patterns. It has been introduced to Hong Kong by ADA as an art form to express the creativity and uniqueness in individuals, irrespective of age or ability.

Portrait Photography by Mr. Roger Wan - Nothing beats spending the Christmas season with your loved ones. This year, our hotel guests can keep the best holiday memories by taking photos with family and friends by Mr. Roger Wan. Mr. Wan, who is an ADA Angel and the gold medal winner in the 6th International Abilympics, will capture the happy moments of the hotel's guests with his camera in the festively decorated hotel lobby on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Also included in the programme are carols performance by ADA Angels Children's Choir and charity sale of "A Wishing Star" Christmas Decoration.

"The Langham Place Hotel, which is Hong Kong's first Modern Chinese Art Hotel, aspires to be an art advocate. It is our pleasure to partner with ADA this year to promote the concept - "Art is for all," said Brett Butcher, Managing Director of Langham Place Hotel. "This large-scale charity programme is a pioneering initiative in the Hong Kong hotel industry and we will keep up with this commitment to promote local art."

"Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong believes that arts are for everyone. We hope this month-long Christmas charity programme with Langham Place Hotel will let more citizens and tourists get to know our work, and will encourage more organisations and people to help in our future development," said Mr. Raymond Choi, Vice Chairperson, ADA.
