Singapore Airlines to Raise Fuel Surcharge

Travel News Asia 22 April 2005

As a result of the cost of jet fuel rising and staying at higher levels, Singapore Airlines is increasing its fuel surcharge on passenger tickets from May 2005.

The new fuel surcharge will apply on tickets purchased from the following dates onwards:

1 May 2005: From US$4 to US$10 per sector for flights between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
6 May 2005: From US$22 to US$30 per sector on all long-haul flights.

The surcharge on travel on the following sectors remains unchanged:

US$10 for all flights between Singapore and Bandar Seri Begawan, Bangkok, Manila, Penang, Jakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi.

The airline stated that the revised surcharge will still not offset the increase in costs arising from recent record jet fuel prices. At US$70 per barrel, the additional fuel cost to the airline will be in excess of US$300 million for the financial year 2005/06.

The price of jet fuel has risen steadily to over US$70 per barrel in April 2005 from US$58 per barrel in November 2004, when the current surcharge was set. Crude oil prices saw smaller increases to US$52 per barrel from US$49 per barrel over the same period.
