Pictures from Soma and Shinchi, Fukushima, Japan - Page 2

Page 2 of 3. An assortment of pictures from Soma and Shinchi in Fukushima prefecture, Japan.

In 2011, Tohoku suffered a major earthquake which triggered a devastating tsunami that in turn led to what is today the second biggest nuclear disaster in the world.

It was a chain of events which destroyed homes, infrastructure and businesses, killed people, devastated livelihoods and cast a dark cloud over what was once a booming tourist industry.

Today the area is safe to visit, and the government has installed a lot of Geiger counters in an attempt to reassure potential tourists that they can, and indeed should, return.

The area is abundant in natural beauty and has a lot of potential for tourism - both domestic and international. It can easily be reached by road, Shinkansen (bullet train) or even by air as Sendai has its own airport.

The pictures below are designed to highlight the area's natural beauty, the local birds and flora, the reconstruction which is still ongoing in some parts, and some of the incredible as well as colourful history which can be found there. Much more on Fukushima to come.
