Hotels all over the world, offer you different specials; rates with breakfast included, discounts on laundry and F&B, buy two get one, etc. etc. No matter what the offer put in place to entice you to stay at that hotel, there will always be certain costs that you may not be able to avoid, or can you ?

Here we have taken a look at some of the costs the hotels do not tend to publish, to give you an idea of what they offer and what possibly the true cost of accommodation may be.

In this instance we have taken local telephone calls (which you may use to call clients or connect to the internet), the cost of the infamous Club Sandwich through room service, and the costs of putting a shirt through the laundry. Some of the results may indeed surprise you.

In many Asian countries hotels have began to realise that the business man wants the least amounts of surprises and extra costs as possible. Many hotels in Asia, offer complimentary telephone calls on the executive floor, and other benefits such as free laundry or pressing for a number of items. In Hong Kong strangely, the hotels seem to be very slow to pick up on this and most hotels still charge for local telephone calls even on the executive floor. The Grand Hyatt is a clear winner charging the highest of all the hotel on the Island with HK$ 7 per call ! Our hat goes off to the Island Shangri-la who is the only hotel on the Island to offer complimentary local calls in every room. The Conrad, Park Lane, and JW Marriott are also the only other hotels on the Island that offer complimentary local telephone calls on the Island, in their executive floor rooms.

As telephone calls can add a large amount to your bill especially when on a business trip, you may want to read our section on 'Using Mobile Telephones' in Hong Kong. Not forgetting that a local call will be charged every time you connect to the internet and call a client.

We will be updating it from time to time to ensure it remains as accurate as possible. The '+' indicates there is 10% service charge to be added, and 'ut' stands for per call.

This interesting look at the traditionally hidden prices of the Hotels in Hong Kong shows that prices for local telephone calls vary from hotel to hotel between free of charge to HK$ 7 per call. The Grand Hyatt and the Royal Garden are the two most expensive hotels in Hong Kong charging HK$ 7 per call. Only the Shangri-La (both Kowloon and the Island properties) and the Peninsula Hotel offer guests free of charge local calls in every room.  The price of a club sandwich varies between a staggering HK$ 150 + at the Regent Hong Kong all the way down to HK$ 46 at the Island Pacific Hotel, of course hotels will say that the ingredients and so the cost varies, yet there are still quite staggering differences between the five star hotel prices where this is concerned. As for the laundry, prices are quite regular with the highest for a mans shirt being at the Kimberley Hotel on the mainland with a price of HK$ 80 + and the lowest at the Century Harbour Hotel which only charges HK$ 37 +.
